Dublin’s Statues Have Started Talking To Tourists

Dublin library

Aside from an abundance of friendly faces and finding authentic Irish pubs, Dublin boats a rich history, which makes us wonder — what if the statues that dot its cobbled roads could speak?

Wonder no more, because Fáilte Ireland, the country’s national tourism development authority, has launched an initiative dubbed Dublin’s Talking Statues, which uses technology and humour to breathe life into the city’s most famous statues.

Here’s how it works: signage shows visitors how to use their smartphones to receive a call from the statue itself. An impressive line-up of writers and voice actors including Brendan Gleeson, Brenda Fricker, Stephen Rea, Gabriel Byrne, and Ruth Negga have recorded monologues, animating the monuments.

Each monologue has been specially designed to bring the history of these figures to life.

Ten statues have been given the gift of speech, including Oscar Wilde, Cú Chullain, James Joyce and George Bernard Shaw. All are part of a pilot scheme, with more statues currently being considered for animation.
