Sydney: Opera on the Harbour

sydopera

Pop-ups at galleries and shops are one thing, but a pop-up at Sydney’s Royal Botanic Gardens, complete with harbourside views? Now you’re talking. Currently in its sixth year, the ambitious Handa Opera series presents opera like you’ve never seen it: outside. This year, opera’s most infamous femme fatale is coming to the Sydney Opera House forecourt, with a performance of Bizet’s famous opera Carmen set against the iconic Sydney skyline. Complete with pop-up bars, restaurants, tiered seats and fireworks, this is worth checking out, even if opera isn’t your usual thing.

Adelaide: Adelaide International Kite Festival

Kites bring out the kid in all of us, and there’s no better place to enjoy elaborate kites sailing gusts of wind than at Adelaide’s picturesque Semaphore Beach this weekend. The free event is held across three family-friendly days, and whatever you do, keep an eye out for the infamous lolly drop, in which bags of lollies parachute down from one massive kite (AKA heaven).

Melbourne: Black Star Pastry pop-up

blackstar

Sydney’s renowned Black Star Pastry has arrived in Melbourne for a three-month pop-up stint. The famous strawberry and watermelon cake will finally be on offer in Melbourne, along with the patisseries equally as delectable lemon pistachio zen cake, vegan chocolate popcorn cake and more. The pop-up is taking place within Café Italia in Carlton, and though there’s only room for 20 diners, there’s more than enough sugary goodness to go around. The selection is reportedly more limited than what you’ll find in their flagship Sydney store, but it’s enough to satiate even the sweetest teeth out there.

Darwin: iNsTagrammers: the best Of NT photography from Instagram

The Northern Territory might not get as much cultural recognition as the country’s east coast, but that’s not to say it’s not as beautiful or intriguing. There are millions of stunning photos capturing NT’s best angles on Instagram, and the best of these are going on display at the Northern Territory Library in Darwin’s Parliament House. The temporary photography exhibition will celebrate everything that Darwin and its lush surrounds have to offer; think blushing sunsets, vast landscapes, wildlife and indigenous Australian culture.

Brisbane: Christopher Lees – Pathway To Solitude

brisbane

Soak up some art and culture with a visit to the REDSEA Gallery, where you can check out Australian artist Christopher Lees’ latest exhibition, Pathway to Solitude. Lees’ beautifully hyper-real style grew out of his formative years as a landscape painter, and the result is a visually enthralling take on Australian scenery. Through his art, Lees aims to “take people to a place that they couldn’t get to alone,” so prepare yourself to be transported in the best way possible.
