We Are Handsome Swimwear Share Their Top Travel Tips
Creative husband and wife team Jeremy and Katinka Somers are the well-travelled duo behind successful swimwear label We Are Handsome. Launching in 2009 and worn by super celebrities like Beyonce, Rihanna and Diane Kruger, the label offers up a luxurious slice of summer in each of its swimwear pieces. Jeremy and Katina have been hugely influenced by their extensive travels and their brand is now stocked in over 38 countries worldwide, making it a truly global brand. We caught up with them to find out their top travel tips and destination recommendations.
What’s your top tip for beating jet lag?
When you get on the plane, set your mind and time to your destination and sleep when it’s night there – get your body onto that zone ASAP and you’ll be fine.
What’s the number one thing you won’t fly without in your carry-on?
That little headphones jack so you can plug your headphones into the plane.
Where’s your favourite place in the world to touch down in?
Africa. Out of the big cities, in rural areas, you might find the plane has to make two passes at the runway to clear off the zebras, wildebeest and other wildlife before you can land!
What’s the most ridiculously cool hotel you’ve ever stayed in and why?
This is a tough one… Ayada Maldives probably, with a glass pane in the floor to see the fish, an infinity pool that you can jump into the ocean from and your own bicycle to get around the tiny island.
Instagrams out of the plane window: cliché or cool?
Cliché. Totally.
Which place is on the top of your bucket list?
South America – Venezuela, The Inca Trail, and so much more!
Where’s your favourite hotel pool of all time?
Kata Rocks, Phuket. It’s massive, perched on a cliff, has an infinity edge and most importantly, the tiles are the perfect shade of blue.
What’s the first overseas country you ever went to and did you like it?
Together we went to Malaysia and Borneo and fell in love with the people, the environment and the landscapes.
Recommend a great movie to watch/book to read on a long plane ride.
We love to watch the classics on a plane – there’s always a good selection of oldies and Oscar favourites.
Are you a window seat or an aisle person?
I love the aisle and Katinka loves the window. Usually one of us loses out though!
What goes into scouting for a fashion shoot location?
Many many hours of research, Google Earth-ing, Trip Advisor-ing and research. Because we travel so far away, you never get the chance to scout beforehand, so much of the success is in the preparation.
Top tips for staying stylish while flying?
Bring a fresh shirt, hairbrush, toothbrush and deodorant. Wash up before you get off and you’ll feel like a million bucks!
What destination has inspired your design the most?
Africa, definitely. We’ve been on safari a few times and it’s always on our minds. Especially our prints and even our styles are inspired by our Africa trips!
