Wish You Were Here: Kaya Mawa, Malawi
Malawi, the landlocked country that borders Mozambique and Tanzania, is known for its impressive highlands, deep valleys and the enormous Lake Malawi. Stretching over 29,000 square kilometres, it’s actually one of the world’s largest lakes and even has it’s own National Park brimming with wild birds, fish and baboons. One of two inhabited islands on the lake is Likoma Island, home to the impressive Kaya Mawa estate.
Kaya Mawa literally translates to “maybe tomorrow”, and it’s kind of the perfect sentiment for this place. Relaxation is the name of the game, and they do so in serious style.
The lodge is built on a rocky outcrop that juts out into Lake Malawi. Just 26 guests can be accommodated at any one time, with a number of standard and premier rooms on offer, the latter with their own private plunge pools.
But Ndomo House is the cherry on top of a fantastic hotel – this four-bedroom villa is located on a private beach two coves away from the hotel. It’s equipped with a pool, your own chef and a speedboat so you can get back to civilisation (trust us when we say, you’re probably not going to want to leave).
On the secluded island, you can go scuba diving, check out the fishing villages and markets, try kite-surfing or sailing and explore the stunning cathedral, which is one of the largest churches in Africa.
