Canberra Has Been Named Among The World’s Top Cities To Visit

Well, would you look at that – our humble national capital has been named among the world’s must-visit destinations in Lonely Planet’s annual Best in Travel rankings.

Rounding out the top three in the much-anticipated round-up, Canberra was called “criminally overlooked” by editors at the publication, who said it “packs a big punch for such a small city”.

They were quick to point out that there’s much more to the city than Questacon and the roundabouts stuck in the minds of those of us who travelled to Canberra on school excursions way back when.

“National treasures are found around almost every corner and exciting new boutique precincts have emerged, bulging with gastronomic highlights and cultural must-dos,” spokesman Chris Zeiher said.

Seville in Spain and Detroit in the USA came in first and second respectively, while Oslo in Norway rounded out the top 10:

  1. Seville, Spain
  2. Detroit, USA
  3. Canberra, Australia
  4. Hamburg, Germany
  5. Kaohsiung, Taiwan, China
  6. Antwerp, Belgium
  7. Matera, Italy
  8. San Juan, Puerto Rico
  9. Guanajuato, Mexico
  10. Oslo, Norway

It’s not the first time an Australian city has featured in Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel: Darwin was first recognised in 2012, while Hobart made the list the following year. Adelaide made an appearance in 2014, while Fremantle was included in the top 10 in 2016.

It is, however, the highest ranking for any Australian city since the project began in 2010. Fingers crossed for top-spot debut in 2018.
