California’s New Sleeper Bus Is A Pod Hotel On Wheels
California’s long and winding Highway 1 may be one of the most beautiful drives in the world, but sometimes you just wanna get from A to B. Enter: Cabin – a “moving hotel” transporting travellers between San Francisco and Los Angeles overnight from this month.
The service has been implemented after the company’s pilot program, called SleepBus, racked up a long waiting list in 2016.
A kind of capsule-hotel-on-wheels, services leave San Fran and LA at 11pm and, all going well, arrive at their destination around 7am the next morning – just in time to catch one of those famous Los Angeles sunrises. Fortunately, luggage is restricted to two regular pieces and a small carry-on bag, meaning you won’t be held up while the driver plays Testris with your fellow travellers’ belongings.
Designed for privacy and safety, travellers get their own pod hotel-inspired flat-lay bed, which is freshly made for every trip. There are also 24/7 attendants on board, a bathroom, a night-time tea service and freshly brewed coffee for the mornings (if you can stomach America’s much-loved filter coffee). But if you’re more of a night owl, the cabins are fitted-out with USB sockets, reading lights and that all-important Wi-Fi.
The service only runs between Los Angeles and San Francisco for the time being, but Cabin bosses say they’re already looking to expand it to other parts of the US. Trips start at $150 ($115USD) per person for a one-way ticket and can be booked via the website.
