#1 Rome Cavalieri, Rome, Italy

When a hotel’s private art collection rivals those found in museums and galleries, you know you’re in for an amazing stay. The Rome Cavalieri is home to more than a thousand artworks and ancient treasures, ranking from 16th century masterpieces to contemporary art.

Guests can see the exceptional Triumph of Mars tapestry, a white marble statue of Minos from Greek mythology, the Judgement of Paris painting, and a series of massive 17th century tapestries that trace the history of the Emperor of China.

As the saying goes: When in Rome Cavalieri, visit the Colosseum. Okay, maybe that’s not how the saying goes, but the hotel is less than an hour from the landmark, so you might as well. Trevi Fountain, St. Peter’s Basilica, and the Pantheon are all nearby as well. Score.

#2 The St Regis Aspen Resort, Colorado, United States

This ski resort has a live-in dog, what more do you want? Kitty is a Bernese mountain dog who lives and works at the St Regis Aspen Resort. He’ll greet you on arrival and roams the hotel looking for pats and cuddles. Employee of the month (every month) right there.

The resort itself is a luxe adventure haven, getting you close to four mountains offering world-class skiing during winter, and offering whitewater rafting, mountain biking, horseback riding and more during the warmer months.

#3 Seven Hotel, Paris, France

Ever wanted to feel like a secret agent jetting off around the world on a top-secret mission? A night at the Secret Agent Suite at the Seven Hotel in Paris will do the trick.

The 007-inspired suite has all the sophistication and none of the gimmick that’s usually associated with themed hotels, dropping you into the day to day life of a secret agent. It’s vintage chic meets futuristic design.

There are other themed suites to choose from at Seven Hotel, too, like the Cabaret Suite that’s perfectly chic for lovers of grand Parisian nights. There are also regular rooms, if you’re into that kind of thing.

#4 Lion Sands, South Africa

The five-star River and Tinga Lodges at Lion Sands are inside a national park, just a few steps away from the Sabi Sands Game Reserve where lions and zebras roam. Embark on a wildlife safari to get up close and personal with the animals – you’re likely to see leopards, rhinos, elephants, buffalo, giraffe, and hippos, among others.

After you’ve met the locals, the lodges have everything you need for a glam night in. Think spas, massages and facials, luxury rooms, and private pools.

#5 Hôtel de Glace, Quebec, Canada

Ice hotels are, by their very nature, temporary – when winter ends, they melt away. Hôtel de Glace takes this opportunity to rebuild itself each season with a different theme.

The themes are reflected in the hotel’s new design and furnishings, and in the impressive ice sculptures scattered throughout. There’s also a nightclub, spa, and sauna to keep you busy.

You’ll have to plan your visit around Canada’s cold months – the hotel generally opens in December each year – but you’ll also be close to skiing and other winter activities.

#6 Nickelodeon Hotels & Resorts, Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? You do!

The SpongeBob-themed room at Nickelodeon Hotels & Resorts may be meant for families with young kids, but there’s technically nothing stopping fun-loving adults from staying here as well. It’s the closest you’ll come to living in your fave cartoon underwater world.

The hotel isn’t anything to shake your fist at, either – private butlers take care of your every need and arrange personalised activities like a moonlight beach dinner, wine tasting and pizza party (again, perfect for adults).

#7 Madonna Inn, California, United States

It’s kind of campy, kind of opulent, very pink, and extremely lush. The Madonna Inn is a legendary resort hotel that embraces its over-the-top aesthetic and, in doing so, becomes a landmark destination.

Despite what the name suggests, the Madonna Inn isn’t associated with the Queen of Pop (I was disappointed too), but that doesn’t stop it from being just as extra as one of Madge’s music videos.

There’s an on-site bakery that turns out pink pastries daily, a cocktail lounge, day spa, and famous restrooms (seriously, they’re renowned).

#8 Sal Salis Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia, Australia

Where the Outback meets the reef, meets hammocks. Sal Salis Ningaloo Reef is a beachside safari camp for anyone who wants to snorkel above a coral reef at 10am, explore a national park at 12, and stargaze at 10pm. Trade in lions and zebras for humpback whales and dolphins, both of which you’ll have the chance to swim with in the water that’s just metres from the camp’s edge.

You’ll sleep in eco-luxe wilderness tents on sand dunes above the beach, surrounded by all kinds of cute critters like red kangaroos. There are no TVs or phones here (you can bring one, but don’t expect to get reception), just Cape Range National Park and all its inhabitants.
