These Are The Best Wineries In The Country, According To Australians
Aussies love a good wine country getaway and now we have 25 of the best wineries in Australia to slowly tick off our lists, thanks to a new travel survey.
Global travel site Big7Travel asked for feedback from around 7000 Aussies, plus their own team of travel experts, to put together a list of the 25 best wineries in Australia.
“Australia is blessed with some of the best wine-growing conditions of any country and winemaking takes place in every state and territory,” they explain. “As a result, Australia has some wonderful wineries and vineyards many of which are open to the public.”
Here are the top 5 to get you started.
#5 Yalumba, Barossa Valley, SA
Of course, Australia’s oldest family winery had to make it into the best wineries in Australia list. Yalumba is one of just a handful of wineries in the world to have its own barrel-making cooperage and its cooperage tour just took out the ‘Best Additional Cellar Door Experience’ in Gourmet Traveller WINE’s awards.
Just over an hour’s drive from Adelaide in the beautiful Barossa Valley, this winery serves up serene views alongside terrific wines.
#4 Mason Wines, Tamborine Mountain, Qld
Just a one-hour drive from Brisbane in the scenic Granite Belt sits Mason Wines – another excuse to use your $100 travel voucher.
There’s an onsite restaurant serving delish gourmet local Scenic Rim produce, as well as your cellar door experience tasting wines and learning about the winery. To make the most of the fresh air, you can also take to the grass with a vino and cheese platter.
Mason Wines makes a wide range of wines, including sauvignon blanc, shiraz, Petit Verdot and viognier.
#3 Grant Burge Wines, Barossa Valley, SA
Located in the heart of South Australia’s celebrated Barossa Valley, Grant Burge Wines is known for its big and bold reds. However you can also get your hands on other varietals, including sparkling and rosé wines, classic shiraz, grenache and fortified wines.
Head to a tasting at the Krondorf or Meshach Cellar Doors where you’ll be bestowed with impressive views across the valley.
#2 Penfolds Magill Estate, Adelaide Hills, SA
Another South Australian entry in the top five and you couldn’t get a more iconic name. Penfolds is one of Australia’s best-known wine brands and Penfolds Magill Estate is the closest winery to Adelaide city (just 8kms away!), making it a great day trip.
Enjoy the wonderful wine range with a meal in the estate’s kitchen or head to the cellar door for a tasting and tour. Make sure you try the Reserve Bin A Chardonnay.
#1 Leeuwin Estate, Margaret River, WA
And the best of the best wineries in Australia? That would be family-run Leeuwin Estate, known for making delicious chardonnays and cabernet sauvignon. It’s also known for its association with the arts (and there’s an actual art gallery on-site you can visit).
“Throughout the year, the estate hosts concerts and cookery classes and various other events. You really can make a whole day of it at Leeuwin Estate especially when you add in a wine tasting and meal in the fabulous restaurant. We highly recommend the Leeuwin Immersion Experience, which includes a gallery tour and food tasting flight,” says Big7Travel.
