The Awards For The Best Hostels In The World Are Here

It’s 2019: there’s no need to stay in dingy, inhospitable hostels any more. Once considered a last resort, reserved solely for travellers looking to cut budgetary corners, hostel culture has made leaps and bounds of progress over the last few years.

Need evidence? Just have a look at the winners of the HOSCAR (Hostelworld Customer Annual Ratings) Awards, an annual set of plaudits held by Hostelworld and given to the best hostels around the world. The awards are based on Hostelworld’s customer ratings.

One of the most decorated businesses at this year’s HOSCARs is the Adventure Queenstown Hostel. Located in the heart of New Zealand’s Queenstown, the Adventure Hostel boasts friendly staff, clean lodgings, a Playstation, Netflix, and easy access to local ski facilities.

The Adventure Hostel picked up awards for Best Location, Best For Pre-Uni Gap-Yearers, and Best in Oceania (making this another case of New Zealanders doing stuff better than us Aussies).

Moving overseas, the HOSCAR award for Best in Europe and Best For Solo Travellers went to Prague‘s The Roadhouse.

A glowing riposte to the idea that hostels need serve nothing more complicated than a bit of toast and some packets of jam for breakfast, The Roadhouse boasts a delicious menu, not to mention warm, inviting dining areas.

Meanwhile, the best hostels for female and male travellers went to We Love F******* Tourists (it stands for Friendly) in Lisbon and Hostel One Paralelo in Barcelona respectively.

Oh, and if you’re looking to stretch your dollar as far as possible, Dalat Friendly Fun in Vietnam is the place to go; that spacious locale was voted Best Value For Money.

In any case, wherever you’re travelling, consider booking a few nights into a hostel: it’ll be a fun, friendly, action-packed experience you won’t forget any time soon.
