Australia Has Made It To The Top Of A New Ranking For The Best Countries To Live That #VanLife

Aussies have always loved a road trip, but it’s become even more freeing in 2021. It’s our best way to explore our country, discover new places, and stop feeling cooped up after lockdown. It’s a form of travel we’ve taken all over the world, to be honest, but all countries are created equal for the ultimate road trip.

International camping experts, Cool Camping, have put together the Van Life Index to rank the best countries around the world for living that #vanlife based on things like safety, road conditions, scenery, air pollution and amenities like public toilets.

While the list is giving me a lot of FOMO and making me create even more travel lists for when the international borders re-open, the best news is that Australia was ranked second overall.

Spain won the day, thanks to its “efficient road connectivity and traffic levels, brilliant weather, beautiful scenery, good air quality and plenty of access to free WiFi”. That last one being something we know Australia can’t compete with *sigh*.

However, at just two points less, Australia ranked second for its “excellent road connectivity between major cities, idyllic weather; natural beauty and air quality, plenty of public toilets and one of the world’s happiest populations”. You hear that? We’re a happy bunch — probably because of all the road tripping.

Honestly it’s no surprise, we have some epic places to see and more time to see them now that we’re not just flying over them on planes and working remotely is more common. Even if you only have a day there’s trips like this one to the epic Sea Cliff Bridge lookout just outside of Sydney.

Or if you have a long weekend there’s this perfect itinerary outside of Adelaide, and this one from Sydney to Orange. If you’re a foodie, these itineraries all over Australia will tantalise your taste buds and support local.

The full top 10 list included:

  1. Spain
  2. Australia
  3. Switzerland
  4. Portugal
  5. Canada
  6. Finland
  7. Sweden
  8. France
  9. New Zealand
  10. USA

You’ll notice our neighbour New Zealand also made the top 10 list, which is really no surprise. Given it’ll probably be the first international country we’re allowed to travel too, I might start planning my overseas road trip there first.

You can check out the full list of 35 countries here, as well as the full methodology behind the rankings.
