National Ballooning Championships
If you didn’t make it to Cappadocia to see the sun rise on your Euro trip this year, never fear – 90-minute road trip to the National Ballooning Championships in Northam can help fill the void.
Taking off every morning at sunrise, hot air ballooners from across Australia and the world will fill the skies above Northam. Practice flights will be running for the first two days, while the championships themselves will take place from Monday to Friday, at both dawn and dusk.
Flights are weather-dependent, so if you’re coming from further afield (road-tripping from Perth), booking accommodation and keeping track of updates online is advised. Entry is free.

Kings Park Festival
A long-standing tradition to celebrate the arrival of spring, the Kings Park Festival is all about sunshine and wild flowers.
Get in on one of the many different guided wildflower walk-and-talks or tackle the urban wilderness on a solo adventure. There are umpteen free walks and exhibitions each day, but just sitting atop the hill along Fraser Avenue also makes for a nice day out.
Make a day of it by going for a walk, then soak up the spring sunshine enjoy a picnic surrounded by flowers. Entry is free.

Wanderlust 108
They say summer bodies are made in winter. And it’s better starting late than never, right?
If you could use a bit of post-winter activity, pop your leggings on, grab your yoga mat and make a beeline for Wanderlust 108. Touted as a “mindful triathlon”, your ticket entitles you participation in a 5km fun run, an outdoor yoga class and a guided meditation. You can also sign up to one extra scheduled activity throughout the day, be it hula hooping or an essential oil workshop.
You don’t need to be an Olympic athlete to join in, just get down and get moving. Tickets will set you back between $45 and $65.

WA Beer and Beef Festival
Fans of beer and beef – this one’s for you.
At the WA Beer and Beef Festival, taste your way around 20 of Australia’s best lagers and ales before settling down to enjoy the gorgeous view of Elizabeth Quay with a pint of your favourite and a juicy beef burger.
With 22 food and market stalls, there is a lot of beef (and even chips and froyo!) to sink your teeth in to. In the name of responsible drinking, it is safest to get an Uber or public transport down to the quay. Tickets start at $15.

Supersake Japanese Beer and Sake Festival
It may be dubbed a beer and sake festival, but the Supersake Japanese Beer and Sake Festival promises is a lot more than that.
Sip on over 50 different Japanese whiskies, beers, plum wines and sake, all while learning from the experts and munching on Japanese fare. Yamu!
Food starts from just $5, and everything you sample will be available to purchase and take home. Entry to the event is free, but anyone keen on sampling sake will need to purchase a $15.00 sampler wrist band to get into the good stuff. Tanoshinde!

Telstra Perth Fashion Festival
From midday, retailer runways to evening designer showcases, Telstra Perth Fashion Festival is the city’s biggest annual celebration of style.
Get to one of the free shows in Forrest Chase for a chance to see retailers like Gorman, Forever New and Culture Kings take to the runway, or purchase tickets to the second week of festival happenings out at Crown Pyramid. With a focus on local and national designers, the second week of the festival will see many established and up-and-coming designers show off their work, with many socialites showing off their latest and greatest outfits.

Lavazza Italian Film Festival
In September, trade your Hollywood blockbuster date night for a night out at the Italian Film Festival.
Run across two of Perth’s boutique cinemas – Cinema Paradiso in Northbridge and Luna on SX in Fremantle – the festival is screening over 30 of the best contemporary and classic independent Italian films. Kick off the festivities with a glass of prosecco and ice-cream at the opening, or keep it low key with a midweek screening and a pasta dinner to follow. What could be more romantic?!
