Ben & Jerry’s Have Blessed Us All By Dropping Their Coveted Edible Cookie Dough Recipe

The last few months have been undoubtedly tough, but a sweet silver lining has been major food brands finally releasing recipes using their most popular products – from a KFC Zinger parmy to TimTam brownies and Cadbury Caramilk banana cake.

Now, Ben & Jerry’s have stepped up to the plate and blessed us by dropping the recipe to their iconic edible cookie dough.

Yes, it is the very same recipe for the frozen cookie dough balls the hugely popular US ice-cream company uses in their ice cream flavours — one that fans have been waiting a long time for.

And the reason they describe it as ‘edible’ cookie dough is because it’s totally safe to wolf down raw. It’s eggless with heat-treated flour, which reduces any risk of getting sick from nasty stuff like salmonella.

It takes just 15 minutes and you’ll only need seven ingredients, so you can easily whip up a batch before a Netflix/Stan binge.

We’ve converted the US recipe to Aussie portions for you from the original recipe.

Ingredients

6 tbsps unsalted butter (1 stick or 110g), room temperature

200g brown sugar, packed

1 ½ tbsps heavy cream

1 tsp vanilla extract

¼ tsp ground sea salt or table salt

200g flour

½ cup chocolate chips

Method

  1. First, heat treat the flour to ensure it is safe to eat. Do not skip this step, untreated flour can contain contaminants and is not safe to eat. Place the flour in a microwave safe bowl and microwave on high in 30-second intervals, stirring in between or spread out your flour on a baking tray and pop it in the oven at 75°C. Either way, use an instant-read thermometer to ensure that the flour reaches 75°C throughout.
  2. In a stand mixer or using a hand mixer, beat together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the vanilla, cream, and salt. Mix to combine. Then add the heat treated flour and mix to incorporate.
  4. Fold on the chocolate chips, and enjoy.

Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator (if they make it that far).

If this weren’t enough, Ben & Jerry’s also have a bunch of ideas for how to eat your choc chip cookie dough, and it isn’t with a spoon.

“We did a lot of research into the best ways to enjoy edible chocolate chip cookie dough when we were creating our Cookie Dough Chunks flavors [sic], and we found that poppable, snackable bites made for the most satisfying nosh,” they say on their website.

They reckon the little dough chunks will work sprinkled on a bowl of ice cream, covered in chocolate to make cookie dough truffles, to decorate cupcakes and even to make cookie dough sandwiches (think ice-cream sandwiches with dough instead of ice cream). Check the list here.
