Arguably Australia’s Best Ocean Pool Has Reopened

It’s baaaaack! Newcastle’s Bogey Hole has reopened – and just in time for summer.

Only two hours north of Sydney, Newcastle has had a few reincarnations over the years – once a coal, steel and timber hub, some say this harbour city is Australia’s new arts capital – but one thing that’s remained the same is the iconic Bogey Hole.

Bogey Hole is a natural swimming pool located beneath headland at King Edwards Park. It’s because of Bogey’s unique location that the pool has remained closed for the past year over the threat of rock falls.

But since its closure, Bogey has undergone a $490,000 rock-bolting upgrade to make the area safe to swim in again.

The pool was built for Major James Morriset in 1819, making it the earliest purpose-built ocean pool in Australia. It provides amazing views of the coastline and you’ll often get waves from the ocean crashing up against the pool and washing over you. Which is basically like having a splash fight with nature.
