7 Little Things That Are A Godsend If You’re An Anxious Traveller
This feature is brought to you by Qantas, who are proud to play a part in bringing travellers together with the people they love from around Australia and across the globe.
For most people, having a holiday booked and on the horizon is an incredibly exciting time. You’ll be thinking about the new friends you’re about to meet, the unique situations you’re about to find yourself in, and the beautiful destinations you’re about to see.
But for the anxious traveller, it can be a different story entirely. For some of us, the thought of the journeys we’re about to take can cloud the excitement and make the idea of an upcoming trip seem downright daunting.
Luckily though, there are a few things you can do to recognise and calm your nerves. They’re designed to make your journey run as smoothly and seamlessly as possible, stopping any negative thoughts in their tracks.
#1 Eat Up
Eating junk food is known to worsen anxiety. For that reason, when flying, it’s important to consume foods that are low in sugar and packed with complex carbohydrates.
If you’re travelling on any Qantas flight, though, you won’t need to concern yourself with that – healthy meals are always included in your ticket and a welcome drink is offered after take-off, along with snacks and refreshments throughout your flight
Even better, passengers flying internationally from Australia can select their meal online up to 12 hours prior to departure on selected flights.
#2 Let Me Entertain You
Distraction is key to easing anxiety. Whether that’s through striking up conversation with your seat neighbour, watching a new TV series or box set, latest movie or simply by sleeping, busying yourself can help you to get out of your restless mind and into the present.
And with Qantas flights, you have a choice of all three. While many other airlines these days charge extra for entertainment, on Qantas flights, it’s always included.
#3 C’mon, Get Appy
While a big part of the stress of flying is feeling like you don’t have control, a lot of worrying can also stem from the details you can control, like the thought of missing your flight, losing your boarding pass or not being able to organise on-ground transport when you land. If that’s the case, you’ll be pleased to know Qantas has an app just for that. The Qantas App lets you store all your information – like boarding passes, flight alerts, and hotel bookings – in one place.
It also allows you to check-in on domestic flights and selected international flights and the best bit is that it’s free. You can download the app here.
#4 Zen Out
It’s known that deep breaths and focusing on the here-and-now can help to ease heart-racing anxiety. And while you can of course close your eyes and attempt to do both on your own, Qantas recently-introduced a Guided Meditation Series, which makes the process a whole lot easier. The 10-minute guided meditation video features aerial footage of some of Australia’s most lovely landscapes, including desert, bushlands, coasts and forests, and it’ll no doubt leave you much calmer than when you started.
#5 Look For The Helpers
Fear of flying is more common than you’d think, and, given flight attendants see thousands of passengers every year, they are trained to support and assist customers throughout the journey. As a result, they’ll do as much as they can to ensure you feel comfortable. Whether you sense a bout of anxiety coming on when checking in or mid-way through your flight, know that you can always let them know and see if there’s anything they might be able to do to make your flight more comfortable.
#6 Get The Facts
Challenging negative thoughts can be an extremely effective way to combat them – as is booking your flights with an airline that boasts an impressive safety record, like Qantas. They’re dedicated to keeping you safe in the sky and where you land, so rest easy knowing you’re travelling with the best in the biz.
Here are some other things to bear in mind: air travel is the safest mode of mass transport, aircrafts are extensively tested before being sold, and commercial planes can fly with just one engine, and in fact, don’t need an engine at all to land.
#7 Remember You’re On A Journey For A Reason
Lastly, and most importantly, is remembering the reason for your journey. Because, as challenging as it may be, it’ll be over before you know it, and you’ll have arrived at your destination.
Travel can teach you life-long lessons about the world. It can give you clarity about the future. It can help you to better understand yourself now. In short, at the end of the day, no one ever regrets travelling, and despite the small amount of discomfort you might experience with it, it’ll always be well worth it in the end.
