And The World’s Most Visited City Is…
Have you been?
Mastercard’s Global Destinations Cities Index has gathered its data and announced the most visited cities in the world for 2016, with a new place taking out the top spot.
Bangkok is this year’s most visited city with 21.47 million overnight visitors. London, last year’s winner, has come in second with 19.88 million visitors.
Interestingly, Thailand’s capital has seen its number of incoming travellers increase by nearly 20 percent since last year, while the rest of the countries in the top ten saw no significant changes.
Here’s the top 10 list of 2016’s most visited cities:
#1 Bangkok, Thailand
#2 London, UK
#3 Paris, France
#4 Dubai, UAE
#5 New York, USA
#7 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
#8 Istanbul, Turkey
#9 Tokyo, Japan
#10 Seoul, South Korea
Typically, cities that score highly are both destinations in their own right and layovers that serve as gateways to nearby cities and countries. Bangkok is one of the main stop-overs for those heading on to Europe and the rest of Asia, but with some of the world’s most incredible food and nightlife, and easy access to ‘can we stay forever?’ beaches, Bangkok is worth way more than a stopover.
