Huzzah! Amtrak Is Finally Getting High-Speed Trains Like The Rest Of The Planet

Amtrak has served the United States as a totally reliable and inexpensive transport model, ever since it was founded in 1970. But boy, oh boy, in comparison with other, more modern train systems around the world, it is slow-as-heck and struggles to keep up.

Well, until now. Thanks to a $3.4 billion (US$2.45 billion) loan from the federal government, the company plans to invest in a fleet of new, high-tech and high-speed trains over the next few years.

Amtrak plan to provide America with more reliable, and faster trains has been explained in a recent press release. Most of the money borrowed from the government will be invested by purchasing 28 next-generation high-speed train sets that will eventually replace the current machines in operation along the Northeast Corridor.

The new trains will travel up to speeds of 260km per hour, be kitted out with fully-functioning wi-fi, USB ports, reading lights and more.

Amtrak hopes to have these new, high-speed trains by 2021. But in the meantime, make the most of the existing trains and hop aboard for a ride – they offer some of the most stunning and scenic views of America from on board.
