Green Day’s ‘American Idiot’ Musical Gets Set To Kick Off In Sydney

Finally, all that pent-up teenage angst has an outlet: Tony and Grammy Award-winning rock musical American Idiot will make its Sydney debut at the Opera House’s Concert Hall this January.

Following a strictly limited season at the Opera House, the production will tour nation-wide to the Her Majesty’s Theatre at the Adelaide Festival Centre, Crown Theatre Perth, Melbourne’s Comedy Theatre and Queensland Performing Arts Centre in Brisbane.

The musical is the brainchild of Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong and Tony Award-winner Michael Mayer, featuring every song from Green Day’s career-shaping album, American Idiot, as well as a selection of songs from the band’s back catalogue. Grinspoon frontman Phil Jamieson will again take on the lead role of St. Jimmy.

American Idiot tells the story of three mates struggling with a decision to challenge current conventions and break out of their mundane day-to-day lives. The story follows them on their journey to finding clarity in a world full of violence and dissolution, channelling the grungy spirit of punk rock while pulling at the heartstrings.

American Idiot will smash the roof of the Concert Hall this January. It’s a thrilling ride for musical and rock’n’roll fans of all ages,” Sydney Opera House Head of Contemporary Performance, Danielle Harvey, said in a media release.
