The Chats Are Headlining Australia’s First Drive-In Music Festival On The Sunshine Coast
One of the things I’ve been missing most since coronavirus, is live music. Don’t get me wrong, I was jamming along to every live-streamed festival and performance I could get my hands on, but it wasn’t enough. So thank god that Airwaves: The Drive-In Music Festival has been announced for the Sunshine Coast.
The music industry has been one of the hardest hit by lockdown regulations, with gigs and festivals as we knew them still off the table until we find a vaccine.
With that reality in mind, there have been talks of pivoting to drive-in gigs since May, as promoters and bands worldwide started trying to figure out how to hold an event while still respecting social distancing measures.
Personally, I think this is a brilliant answer. Imagine all the intimacy and fun of your fave bands on stage doing their thing, without have the sweat of a thousand people all over you in the mosh pit. Or sore feet. Or the panic of loosing your prime spot which you lined up all day for, just because you’re desperate for a wee. This is the only thing better than a drive-in movie.
So, what’s the deal?
Airwaves: The Drive-In Music Festival will be held at Nambour Showground on the Sunshine Coast from Friday, July 10 to Sunday July 12.
Instead of buying a single ticket, you buy a ticket for your car, which can have up to five people inside it. You’ll be designated a car spot and, depending on the type of ticket you choose, a bunch of goodies to go with it.
Drinks are on a BYO basis, although obviously you’ve got to be smart and nominate a deso driver (yes, there will be breathalysers).
The organisers have made the event coronavirus-safe, with with contactless ticketing and to-your-door delivery of food and drinks. Not to mention plenty of hand sani and toot paper.
Who’s playing?
At this point, honestly just get me out of the house and watching anyone who can play a few notes. But also this line-up is actually fab, featuring some of the best Aussie artists, including The Chats, The Dreggs and Pierce Brothers.
How much are tickets?
Tickets start at $206.80 for the ‘Outer Deck Experience’ and go up to $329.20 for the ‘Top Deck VIP Cockpit Experience’ – which yes absolutely involves a whole bunch of lollies to snack on and memorabilia stickers. You can buy them here.
My only regret is that I didn’t move to Queensland at the first sign of trouble. Hopefully for the rest of us, other states will follow suit.
