You Can Now Order An Uber Submarine To Explore The Great Barrier Reef

It may feel a little “sharks with frickin’ laser beams on their heads”, but Uber will soon launch ride-share submarines on the Great Barrier Reef. Cleverly dubbed “scUber”, Uber has partnered with Tourism and Events Queensland to offer the unbelievable new service, which is bookable in the Uber app.

In what they’re calling a world-first, the Uber submarine experience will operate from May 27 to June 18. The submarine is a tiny vehicle that will make you feel like you’re exploring beyond the final frontier as you’re scooting around the seafloor exploring the Great Barrier Reef. This Insta post below gives a bit of an impression of what the experience will be like.

Queensland’s tourism organisation discovered that “exploring the Great Barrier Reef in a submarine was the most desired future travel experience”, so quickly set about making everyone’s (quite specific) dreams come true.

The scUber experience will first operate from Heron Island, off the coast of Gladstone on the south end of the reef before moving to a position off the coast of Port Douglas and Cairns from June 9. If you’re planning on taking one of the underwater trips, best be quick – availability is extremely limited.

There will also be an international competition allowing one intrepid traveller from each of Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Canada, France and the United States to win the experience. You can enter at scUberQueensland.com by describing in 25 words or fewer why you should experience the wonder of the Great Barrier Reef with scUber. Sounds pretty straightforward!

The scUber rides will cost $3000 for two riders including:

  • Uber pick up from booking location
  • A return scenic helicopter flight
  • An hour in a scUber submarine
  • Return trip to booking location.

You can also catch Uber boats for the ultimate way to explore the Croatian islands this Euro summer.
