7 Best Things To Do In Brisbane This March

With the Oscars behind us, we’re in need of fresh entertainment. Roll out the red carpet for a vampiric art exhibition, a spot of surreal mini-golf, or an unconventional tour of Brisneyland. Just try not to drip everywhere at the inaugural Ice Cream Festival – the weather is cooling down, we swear!

Propel yourself

Brisbane’s own Expressions Dance Company bring four of Australasia’s most talented young choreographers together. Propel showcases bold contemporary dance with four short works by Lisa Wilson, Amy Hollingsworth, Xu Yiming, and Elise May. These compelling pieces explore extremes of emotion, intimacy, and power. Propel runs from 3 to 11 March at the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts.

If the apocalypse comes, beep me

buffy

Buffy the Vampire Slayer first slayed our screens in 1997, which brings us to the 20th anniversary of this beloved, genre-smashing teen monster-mash. But how best to celebrate the Buffster and her trusty Scooby Gang? Brisbane’s home of sweet indie media, Junky Comics, is throwing an opening party (“chock full of hoot, just a little bit of nanny,” right, Oz?) for their Welcome to Sunnydale art show. The exhibition features tribute works by 20 artists from Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney, and beyond. Opening night is 10 March, with the show running until March 31 at Junky Comics, 93 Vulture Street, West End.

A tale of one city

Take a stroll around the Powerhouse on an unconventional walking tour. Award-winning actors Therese Collie and Tim Mullooly spin the yarns of Brisbane-town, as written by David Malouf, Oodgeroo Noonuccal, and even The Go-Betweens. Visitors will meet sides of Brisbane they sure won’t see on a tour bus, but even locals will find plenty to learn (and laugh along with). The Story of Brisbane runs every Wednesday in March as part of the Writers+Ideas series at Brisbane Powerhouse.

Join a cult

stand by me

In the House festival of cult classic films brings the best of retro to the big screen throughout 2017. Feel all the feels in Stand By Me on March 3; catch a thrill in The Untouchables on March 17; or learn a little about boutique soap-making in Fight Club on March 31. In the House films continue through the year, all at Brisbane’s Myer Centre Event Cinemas.

The festival we’ve all been screaming for is here: Brisbane’s inaugural Ice Cream Festival will freeze over the historic Peters Ice Cream Factory. There’ll be pop-up stalls from over 20 of Brisbane’s treat-purveyors, including faves like Mister Fitz and Gelato Messina. There’ll also be live music and ice-cold drinks to wash it all down with. Entry is free, but pre-registration is essential. Brisbane Ice Cream Festival melts West End on March 11.

No ifs, just putts

golf

Tee off for a holey experience at the old Warner Street church in the Valley, recently converted into two 18-hole mini-golf courses. Holey Moley is perfect for a party putt, with its whacky challenges, disco vibes, and Caddyshack bar. This unique Brisbane experience (from the team that brought us Strike Bowling) will have you trying to putt your stuff through surreal golfscapes reminiscent of retro arcades, the circus, and even the apocalypse. Holey Moley Golf Club is at 25 Warner Street, Fortitude Valley.

Blinded by science!

The world’s best thinkers converge for a program of live and digital content connecting Asia-Pacific audiences to the badass discoveries and tricksy challenges of present scientific research. Find out how to explore the universe with gravitational waves; get hands on with robots, drones, or slime; experience augmented reality; and even catch a live loggerhead turtle hatching.
