The 7 Best Things To Do In Brisbane This December

Escape the blaring lights, recycled Christmas muzak and busy crowds of shopping malls this month, and head out into Brisbane for something different. Get lost in a mirror maze by the river, drink a cool local cocktail or two, and hang a handmade lantern on a Chrimbo gum tree.

Vegucate yourself

A festival for budding vegos, Vegucation Market pops up at Northey Street City Farm to inspire sustainable, cruelty-free eating in Brisbane. The focus is on awareness via tastebuds at the not-for-profit event, with multiple food stalls, live music, plenty to learn, and plenty of space to chill out. Vegucation runs in the cool evening, from 4.30-10pm on December 9.

Get lit in the garden

EnchantedGarden_20160922_wide

Just to make sure any string of fairy lights you toss up in your front hedge feels sufficiently inferior, Roma Street Parkland’s free-entry Spectacle Garden transforms into a legit twinkly wonderland for Christmas. Contribute to the garden’s glow by making your own bamboo lantern at the workshop run before the lights are lit each evening. The Enchanted Garden is open from 6.30-9pm December 9–18.

R-E-F-L-E-C-T (find out what it means to me)

Solve the labyrinth of mirrors at Brisbane Powerhouse and earn some self-reflect. This maze has no gimmicks, jump-scares or even tricky lighting – just kaleidoscopic chambers, voids, and optical illusions built from mirrors alone. You might get lost in the void and find yourself staring back. The House of Mirrors is installed at Brisbane Powerhouse until 11 December as part of Wonderland Festival.

Reduce your drinking miles

Brisbane’s best inner-city secret, John Mills Himself is the corridor café hidden under Archive Books. One of few heritage-listed buildings left standing in the CBD, the John Mills warehouse was once the office and printery workshop of – you guessed it – John Mills himself. Sister-café to Bunker in Milton, JMH shares the same ethos of top coffee and heirloom drinking chocolate sourced from a variety of local roasters. But by evening, JMH transforms into a bar conscious of ‘drinking miles’. Every beer here has travelled less than 180 kilometres and every wine less than 250 kilometres, with craft spirits travelling from all over Australia, so you can guiltlessly drink away your carbon footprint.

Activi-tea

You’ll need both walking shoes on and pinkie finger out for this one: a high-tea walking tour of the Brisbane CBD. Foodi hosts this event, which treats you to a history of high tea itself, a tour of Brisbane’s classiest tea rooms, and (most importantly) two and a half hours of tasty bites and bubbly. If you love to bathe in shades of earl grey, this is the power walk for you. Foodi’s next Brisbane High Tea Walking Tour takes place on December 17.

Circus goes to new heights

Those Cirque de Soleil folk are up on stilts again, erecting the biggest of big-tops in Brisbane for their latest show. A homage to traditional circus, KOOZA sees comic characters exploring identity, fear and power through commedia dell’arte-style clowning – and acrobatic feats worthy of a 56 foot-tall tent. Check out the VIP experience for behind-the-scenes magic and the most epic glamping experience ever. KOOZA runs until January 8.
