10 Of The Best Ethical Travel Destinations For 2017

Ace news: the Ethical Traveller organisation has released their list of the ten most ethical tourist destinations for 2017.

Ethical travel is about recognising the impact you have on your surroundings and ensuring your footprints are faint ones. It’s something we’re big fans of here at AWOL, so this list couldn’t have come at a better time.

To create the list, the organisation surveys the world’s developing countries based on four categories – environmental protection, social welfare, human rights and animal welfare. For each category, they look at information past and present to understand the current state of a country, and how it’s changed over time, effectively helping them to select nations that are actively improving the state of their people, government and environment.

The idea behind the Ethical Traveller project is to encourage travel to the countries that have done an outstanding job in these fields. As a result, they’re encouraging the behaviours they deem to be a driving force in creating a safer and more sustainable world.

The top ten list for 2017, in alphabetical order, are as follows:

  • Belize
  • Cabo Verde
  • Chile
  • Costa Rica
  • Dominica
  • Mongolia
  • Palau
  • Tonga
  • Uruguay
  • Vanuatu

So who came out on top? In terms of environmental protection, Costa Rica scored favourably, thanks in most part to its commitment to renewable energy. Uruguay scored well for air quality, environmental sustainability and forests, too. For human rights, Belize’s supreme court recently overturned an anti-LGBT law, Costa Rica has a commitment to supporting refugees and fighting human trafficking, Tonga and Vanuatu took steps to fight domestic violence, and Dominica has paved a path towards gender equality.
