You Can Slide From Your Villa Straight Into The Ocean At This Resort

Soneva Jani, Maldives

Well, that’s it. Someone has opened a resort that lets you slide right from your unfathomably luxe villa straight into the ocean, so we’ll never settle for simply walking into the sea ever again. It’s slide or bust.

Welcome to Soneva Jani, a new eco-resort in the Maldives made up of those overwater bungalows that the country seems to be so damn good at.

The resort is a real stunner: It has 24 overwater villas (and one island one) set on stilts above the crystal clear waters of the Medhufaru lagoon, most of which encourage access via a slide snaking down from the villas’ top levels.

Each villa has been fitted with a private pool, a sunken dining table and bath tub on the outdoor deck, a few glass-bottomed areas, and a retractable roof built right into the main bedroom, which makes stargazing from bed an absolute cinch.

Hello moon.

If you’re keen for a closer look at the stars, head to the resort’s overwater observatory – the first of its kind in the Maldives – and ask the resident astronomer all of your night-sky queries.

The centre of the resort, which is accessed by snaking boardwalks, is known as The Gathering and has a few restaurants, a spa, a library, a retail area and an zone for kids. There’s also the Maldives’ first open-water silent cinema on site, which provides guests with Bluetooth-powered headphones so as not to disturb the surrounding wildlife.

But, to be fair, you probably won’t be doing anything else but sliding from your top deck into the ocean, climbing out and up, and doing it over and over again all day, every day, am I right?

Thought so.

A night at Soneva Jani doesn’t come cheap, with single bedroom villas starting at around $3700 per couple, per night – but imagine the photo opps.
