So what has December got in store in the city? A brand new drive-in rooftop cinema, night markets featuring delicious food, gigs at a gallery and a whole lot more.

The best annual retail shopping event is back! The Big Design Market brings the best of independent Australian and international design to Melbourne for three huge days of Christmas shopping. They top off all the retail fun with workshops, info sessions and food and drink stalls. It’s taking place at the Royal Exhibition Building in Carlton Gardens on December 2,3 and 4 and entry is only $2 (free for kids).

Let’s get bubbly

Melbourne loves a festival, and now lovers of all things bubbly can rejoice! Hosted by Wine Republic and featuring Koko Black paired chocolates, the free, three-day Melbourne Champagne Festival will run from Friday December 9 until Sunday December 11 at all three wine republic stores located in in Windsor, Fitzroy, and Northcote . There will be leading boutique brands such as Lamandier Bernier, Delamotte, Henriot, De Sousa and Thienot to ensure you stay classy.

Moonlight Cinema at the Botanical Garden is back with another stellar program. With new releases such as The Girl on The Train as well as classics like Back to the Future, there’s something for everyone. Kicking off on December 8 and running throughout summer, it’s a great chance to take advantage of the warmer weather and take in a movie while you do it. Tickets are available here. Oh and don’t forget, you’re welcome to BYO everything, but there are also food trucks and bars on site.

Multicultural Arts Victoria is behind the fourth edition of Mapping Melbourne, a festival of free multi-artform events showcasing independent contemporary artists exploring the theme of Asia and identity. It will feature visual art, live art, music, contemporary dance, and public programs, taking place throughout Melbourne’s CBD and surrounds. All events are free and more information can be found here.

The night markets are back! While Queen Victoria Market is a mainstay among locals, come the summer months, the night time incarnation sees the delicious aisles come alive with street food, free live music, roving entertainers, specialty and vintage shopping. The markets have already kicked off and will be on every Wednesday from 5-10pm until March 8.

Rooftop, drive through

The Backlot Rooftop Drive-In is located in Docklands and combines rooftop cinemas (which Melbourne loves) with stunning city views to boot. How is this possible? You can either pay per person or per car, depending on the type of cinema experience you’re after. Backlot opens on Boxing Day, and while films are yet to be announced, the buzz is already growing!

Friday nights at the National Gallery of Victoria are gearing up for greatness with a number of fantastic musical acts to look forward to. Cash Savage, Dappled Cities,  Tangents and Models, will al be gracing the stage. You’ll also be afforded after-hours access to major summer exhibitions David Hockney: Current and Viktor&Rolf: Fashion Artists. There will also be DJ sets in the NGV Garden, talks, food and bars. Ticket prices are $30 for adults and available here.
