So There’s A Real-Life Flintstones House In California

Here’s something to look out for the next time you’re driving to San Francisco – there’s a brightly coloured dome house off the side of the road that looks like something out of The Flintstones.

For many of us, the iconic 1960s cartoon is pretty ingrained in our memories – we remember those foot-powered cars, and the woolly mammoth vacuum cleaners and how we always wanted our own pet dinosaur like Dino to hang around with.

In 1976, architect William Nicholson decided to pay homage to the famous cartoon by building a free-standing residence that resembled the Stone Age homes from the cartoon series. Using a number of experimental techniques, including using giant inflated balloons to construct the domed roofs, the house was constructed in Hillsborough, California much to the dismay of the town’s residents.

Because this isn’t Bedrock, it’s modern day California, the Flintstones house sticks out like a sore thumb. In the mid-1980s, due to its location on a steep hillside, as well as some serious wear and tear, the home began to sink, with large cracks appearing on the walls. After some backlash, and a few residents petitioning to have it removed (such party poopers), the home was remodelled and refurbished.

Originally painted white, new owners in the early 2000s decided to give the domed residence an orange hue. All rooms have domed shaped walls which we can only assume is a nightmare when it comes to hanging picture frames. There’s three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a communal living area and one hellova kitchen. Check out those lighted cupboards and glass countertops – so cool!

It was the perfect home for Fred, Betty, Pebbles, Dino the pet dinosaur, and now possibly you? The house actually went on the market a few months ago so this kitschy home could actually be yours. The owner’s asking price? A cool $4.2 million.

If that wasn’t enough weird for you – the best part is that this particular Flintstone house isn’t the only one of its kind. That’s right, American TV personality Dick Clark and his wife used to own their very own Flintstones mansion in Malibu, California as well – this one even comes with a hot tub.

And because you’re about to look it up anyway, here’s that theme song for you.
