Melbourne’s Tomato Festival Will Bring Italy Directly To Your Mouth

If you’ve ever wanted to take part in Looking For Alibrandi’s iconic ‘Tomato Day’ scene, now’s your chance.

The Melbourne Tomato Festival is back for its third year of red, saucy glory on March 19, bringing with it local produce, cooking demonstrations, workshops, speakers and a motherload of delicious Italian food to All Nations Park in Northcote.

The festival’s crown event, the Passata-making workshops, will be running again, in praise of the Italian culture staple of backyard tomato harvests and suburban garage sauce making. Passata, or tomato puree, is an essential part of any pasta sauce, and it’s as vital to Italian cooking as cheek squeezing is to affectionate Nonnas.

The festival has a firm focus on multiculturalism and the preservation of cultures and customs through food. Their ethos is planted in local producers, and will feature demonstrations by Guy Grossi, Karen Martini and Matt Wilkinson. There’ll be Tomato Talks and Workshops, including a gnocchi making class by Woodstock, and street food from the likes of Gelato Tino, That’s Amore, Bar Idda and Saluministi. Yummo.
