What: The Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival is an annual winter festival that showcases the world’s best in ice carving and sculpture.

Where: Harbin, Heilongjiang, China

When: The first week of January, and lasts for about a month.

Average Temperature: Summer temperatures sit at a temperate 21°C but in winter, temperatures can drop to around -16°C.

Fun fact: In 2007, the festival featured a sculpture in memoriam of Canadian doctor Norman Bethune. The Canadian themed composition featured a replica of Niagara Falls and was awarded a Guinness World Record for the world’s largest snow sculpture. It measured 250 metres long, 8.5 metres high and used over 13,000 cubic metres of snow.

Why should you go? The sheer spectacle is insanely beautiful; sculptors from around the world travel to this small Chinese province to take part in this artisan experience. The attention to detail is phenomenal and be sure to check it all out at night when the coloured lights bring the ice city alive.
