Check Out The Plans For New York’s Loopiest Skyscraper
There’s a lot of prestige associated with height, especially in the world of city skyscrapers. Think about the awe we associate with Dubai’s Burj Khalifa and the Shanghai Tower. They’re grand. Interminable. They defy nature.
Now, a New York City architecture firm Oiio Architects has asked the question: what if a skyscraper was long, not tall?
The design came about in order to dodge strict zoning laws in Manhattan that require skyscrapers only reach a certain height. They hypothesised that the building would hold equal, if not more prestige, than a super tall building if it was super long. As Oiio have written on their website: “If we manage to bend our structure instead of bending the zoning rules of New York we would be able to create one of the most prestigious buildings in Manhattan.”
Here’s an artist’s impression of the proposed building, very sweetly named The Big Bend (get it?):
It’s an ambitious move, especially considering that modern lift technology doesn’t currently support long, bendy buildings. But it’s an exciting prospect for the future design of modern cities.
With The Big Bend added or not, we’ll always be pumped for a trip to the Big Apple. It’ll always be like no other city in the world.
