8 Things You Shouldn’t Miss At Vivid Sydney

From May 27 to June 18, Sydney will burn their brightest LEDs for 2016’s Vivid Light, Music and Ideas Festival. This winter party is now the largest of its kind in Australia and this year’s nerve-igniting program is proving to be hottest ticket in town. But with such a huge collection of performances, public ideas programs, workshops and ace lighting displays, deciding on what you’re going to see is proving quite difficult, so here’s eight things you really shouldn’t miss.

Electric Jellyfish

View of First Government House Place (forecourt), Museum of Sydney, showing museum entry cube,  'Edge of the Trees' art installation, and Young Street terraces. From the edge of the trees the Gadigal people watched as the strangers of the First Fleet struggled ashore in 1788. This installation by Janet Laurence and Fiona Foley symbolises that first encounter. Wander through trees embedded with materials and language evoking the layers of memory, people and place.

Multi-sensory experiences are up the wazoo at Vivid Sydney and Electric Jellyfish is possibly the finest. Enter the domed structure to experience moving visuals integrated with an ethereal soundscape; when inside, visitors can ‘pluck’, ‘bounce’ or ‘wobble’ to generate bursts of energy that radiate light and sound up to the centre of the dome.


CLIPPED: Music Video Festival

The highly anticipated CLIPPED: Music Video Festival is an exhibition celebrating high-calibre music videos, award ceremonies and DJs. The event will host a number of discussion panels featuring acclaimed directors, filmmakers, music industry folk and artists, dissecting the eclectic and unique world of music videos. Here’s hoping there’s an in-depth discussion about the latest in claymation animation too.


You Spin Me Right Round

Ever wish street lights were just that little bit more exciting? You Spin Me Right Round will be hijacking Sydney’s streetlights and creating impromptu disco breaks throughout the city. Find designated street lights across Circular Quay with disco balls positioned in front of their lamps – spin the circular disc connected to the narrow pipes and see the mirror ball create a sparkle of motion across the street. Your private disco has begun.


Soul Safari Sydney: Makers And ChangeMakers

Where: The School, 85 Dunning Avenue, Rosebery
When: 9am to 6pm, June 4; 10am to 3pm, June 5
Price: From $79

Soul Safari Sydney is two-day collaborative event for entrepreneurs with burning creative ideas. Day one will focus on learning, listening and connecting with talks from Ken Done, Beci Orpin, Vanessa Holden and more. The second day gets down to the nitty gritty, with The School transformed for a live art event and Instameet. Guests are encouraged to chat, interact and connect with like-minded individuals to make new ideas come to life. If you’ve had an idea on the back-burner for a while, this is where to go to nut it out the kinks and turn it into a reality.


HEAPS GAY – The Festival of Queer Delights

Marrickville’s Factory Theatre will play host to a transformative, all immersive and all inclusive carnival of music and performance. HEAPS GAY – The Festival of Queer Delights will take place across three stages on the Queen’s Birthday long weekend, with a lineup featuring Collarbones, The Blow Waves, Rainbow Chan, Yo! Mafia, HTML Flowers and loads more. Bring your best dance moves and get down to a special performance from local organisation Heaps Decent too. It’s going to be one hell of a night.


Frida’s Tributes

Where: Frida’s, 109 Regent Street, Chippendale

Price: Free

Small but mighty Chippendale bar Frida’s will be hosting a three-day series of tribute nights headlined by local musicians and vocalists. From songstress Sade, to disco queen Tina Turner and boisterous ’80s king George Michael, Frida’s is set to party well into the night for this one. Don’t sleep on it.

Cathedral of Light

A Vivid masterpiece, the Cathedral of Light illuminates Sydney’s Royal Botanic Garden with a 70 metre long tunnel created by thousands of LED light globes. Intimate and electric on the inside and breathtakingly beautiful from the outside, this light show will enliven the senses and spark some magic.


BJÖRK DIGITAL Exhibition

A very special presentation of five unique works by Icelandic musician Björk, BJÖRK DIGITAL is a virtual reality project like no other. Created alongside a number of local and international collaborators, including some of the best filmmakers and programmers in the world, this is an event not to be missed. Go for the hype, stay for the spectacle.
