Underwater? On the side of a cliff? How about the magma chamber of a dormant volcano? Those places probably don’t strike you as the locations for restaurants, but let me assure you, these places exist. And you can totally visit them.

Fangweng Restaurant, China

Roasted duck with a side of vertigo, anyone? The Fangweng Restaurant in Yichang, China is built straight onto a sheer cliff face, dozens of metres above the ground. For the brave punter, Fangweng serve up delicious regional cuisine beside some amazing views of the Hubeil province’s Happy Valley, where the Chang Jiang and Yangtze rivers meet. By the way, there’s also some bungee jumping facilities for the most daring of diners – but maybe wait until your stomach settles for that one, OK?

Saffire Freycinet, Tasmania

Saffire Freycinet‘s luxury lodge has garnered some serious attention of late for its combination of unspoilt natural beauty and mind-blowing food and wine. It brings these two elements together in an incredible restaurant experience that sees guests standing knee-deep in the beautiful waters of Wineglass Bay with a culinary guide shucking fresh oysters right in front of them. Talk about farm to table. Wine and other local delicacies are also involved if oysters aren’t your flavour.

Ristorante Grotta Palazzese, Italy

Located in the medieval town of Polignano a Mare in Southern Italy, this romantic restaurant was carved from a limestone cliff face and sits 22 metres above sea level. Be sure to grab the best seat in the house, the dimly-lit tables for two along the water’s edge – spy over the edge of the balcony and you’ll be able to catch a glimpse of the impossibly blue Adriatic Sea lapping at the cave’s entrance. Risorante Grotta Palazzese is only open in the summer months, seeing as the cold, choppy seas of winter would kind of kill the ambiance.

Rollercoaster Restaurant, worldwide

Someone’s been reading your dream journal again; there’s a legit place where food is delivered to you via a rollercoaster (because waiters are just so passé, you know?) The Rollercoaster Restaurant is a global chain that have invented an entirely new version of food delivery: first you order your food and beverages via a tablet, then your food is dispatched from heights of up to nine metres before gliding down a real-life rollercoaster track and looping and twisting its way to your table for you to enjoy. Thankfully the food is delivered in airtight containers so there’s no spillage. There are currently eight rollercoaster restaurants around the world, including Germany, Russia and the UAE.

At the Villa Escudero Plantations and Resort in the Philippines, the whole “tropical paradise” thing is taken to another level. Sitting at the base of a waterfall, you’ll be served fresh, local Filipino cuisine with warm spring water rushing around your feet.

Ithaa Undersea Restaurant, Maldives

Housed within the Conrad Hotel on Rangali Island in the Maldives, the Ithaa Undersea Restaurant is classified as the world’s “first and only all glass undersea restaurant.” Serving up contemporary Maldivian cuisine with Western and Asian influences, guests can enjoy their meal while being visited by a few sea creatures (just look at those adorable stingrays).

The Rock, Tanzania

The Rock is found off the coast of Zanzibar Island in Tanzania. It’s built on – you guessed it – a rock not too far from the shore of the picturesque Michanwi Pingwe beach in the Indian Ocean. In high tide, the small pocket of land becomes a veritable island, accessed only by wooden boat or, if you’re game, a quick swim from the shore. The Rock also boasts a pretty impressive menu too. Serving lunch and dinner daily, the majority of the restaurant’s food is caught from the ocean beds that surround it. It’s officially on the bucket list.

Just straight up in a volcano, Iceland

Classic Iceland, am I right? There’s probably nowhere else in the world would you be able to have a meal inside a dormant volcano, but considering Iceland’s pure unadulterated love for exploring their volcanos, this seems pretty fitting. This once-in-a-lifetime experience can be done through travel operator Jacada Travel, who take visitors inside Thrihnukagigur volcano, on the southern peninsula of Iceland. Apparently the volcano’s cavernous magma chamber is the perfect place to settle in for a meal and marvel at the fact that the place you were sitting was once full of lava.[/listicle]
