Golden Age Cinema & Bar

Where: Paramount House, 80 Commonwealth Street, Surry Hills

Gone are the days of smuggling a sneaky goon bag into the movies with you. Sydney’s Golden Age Cinema has a super classy small bar open to moviegoers keen on a pre-movie tipple as well as anyone in need of a stiff drink sans-movie. With a film-themed cocktail menu, this is one hell of an opulent place to indulge in a bit of “Whisky Business”.

Mojo Record Bar

Where: Basement level, 73 York Street, Sydney

Vinyl aficionados can rejoice in the knowledge that Sydney has a place where you stock up on some high voltage rock’n’roll, then swing out the back for a Harvey wallbanger like it’s 1969 all over again. Located in an unassuming basement on York Street, this record store-slash-bar is a worthy addition to Sydney’s growing small bar scene.

The Island

Where: Floating somewhere near Athol Bay, Mosman

Places just don’t get much more ‘Sydney’ than this. Described as Australia’s first and only floating beach club, “The Island” may sound like a bad reality TV show, but it’s actually just a sweet, open-air floating bar located within one of the best harbours on the planet.

Featuring DJs and an enclosed area for swimming (presumably for people with shark phobias), this floating bar makes the most of Sydney’s many natural assets. After going through the online approval process (oh Sydney), your $45 ticket price includes water taxi transfers from Double Bay and a welcome drink. With strict rules for attendance, it pays to read the fine print (no neck tatts or bucks parties allowed, okay?).

From poetry nights to folk music gigs and open mic nights for the very brave, this bar wets your whistle, feeds your soul and may even raise your IQ too.

The Barber Shop

Where: 89 York Street, Sydney

While many barbers may offer their customers a frothie while they get their noggin seen to, this place goes one step further by having a whole damned cocktail bar on site. Simply step through a sneaky partition door and you’ll find vintage cocktails popular with gentlemen of the 1800s as well as one of Sydney’s rudest collections of gin. Tally ho!
