Fremantle Festival

freo

The festival city is back with its eponymous festival, the Fremantle Festival, which is also the longest running community festival in Australia. Running from  Friday October 28 to Sunday November 6, the festival will be delivering a diverse line-up of arts and culture in emblematic Freo venues such as the Fremantle Town Hall and St John’s Anglican Church. Featured guests include political observers Waleed Aly and Clementine Ford, and musicians Bernard Fanning, The Drones and Clare Bowditch, to name but a few. This vibrant port city has always been a big supporter of its vast local talent, and we’ll see the Fremantle Fashion Collective launching its annual runway show and Fremantle Press celebrating its 40th anniversary.

Garage Sale Trail

garagesale
They say that one (wo)man’s trash is another (wo)man’s treasure, and this is certainly the mantra behind the 6th annual Garage Sale Trail happening across Australia on Saturday October 22. The Garage Sale Trail is not only about finding a bargain (but hey, who doesn’t love a bargain?), but also about connecting communities and encouraging the ideas and values of reusage and recycling. Peruse your wardrobe and house for clothing and items that may be in need of a more loving home, and organise your own garage sale; or simply brush up on your bartering skills and see what newfound treasures you may uncover on the day.

Beauvine Food and Wine Festival

The Beauvine Food and Wine Festival is back after its hugely successful inaugural event last year. Beauvine takes the best food and drink vendors from WA and around Australia, and serves it up on an appetising plate. Add a side of titillating entertainment spanning music, markets and comedy, and you have a food and wine festival that is guaranteed to become a premier event on Perth’s jam-packed culinary calendar. Expect an abundant gastronomic affair with your favourite wineries, breweries, cideries, distilleries and top-notch eateries including Lucky Chan’s, Mack Daddy’s NY Slice, Clarences and Mary Street Bakery. The festival takes place on the weekend of October 21-23 at Birdwood Square.

Electric Vines

Mark it in your calendars, folks: this year’s Electric Vines is taking place at the Mandoon Estate and Homestead Brewery, and Oakover grounds on Sunday October 16. Buses will be departing from three separate Perth locations and taking guests out to the Swan Valley, where you can let your hair down and take advantage of the free-flowing fine wine, premium beer, fruity ciders and delectable bites on offer from the best of Perth’s food trucks. Best of all, you get to enjoy it against the backdrop of the gorgeous vineyards – no skipper required!

Rumfest

The slogan is ‘Rum, Ribs and Reggae!’ and we don’t think we’ve ever heard a better alliteration of words. Rumfest 2016 is the perfect excuse to venture to the Great Northern Distillery in the Swan Valley where, as the name suggests, there will be plenty of swashbuckling rum, liqueurs and white spirits, and reggae tunes to keep you and your posse entertained. Did we mention the rib-eating competition? If being crowned Rumfest’s Bottomless Pit doesn’t take your fancy, then you can chow down on the jerk chicken and other treats from some of Perth’s best food trucks. The action goes down on Saturday October 8.

Australian Short Story Festival

Calling all bibliophiles! This year, Perth will be playing host to Australia’s inaugural Short Story Festival, which will be held at the Centre for Stories and other venues around Northbridge. Some of Australia’s and WA’s finest writers will be descending into our sunny capital to pay homage to the short story form, a literary genre which has seen a resurgence of late. The compelling program includes conversations with emerging and established short story writers, writing workshops and street-side readings – if you’re looking for an brain-stimulating event, this could very well be it. The Australian Short Story Festival is on from October 21 to 23 . [/listicle]
