Time for a drink

Hidden behind a non-descript Paddington terrace is one of Sydney’s newest gems. Decked out with ambient lighting, and cosy wooden textures, Tequila Mockingbird is a Latin American restaurant with some deliciously modern Australian twists.

Their drinks menu is exciting, with a large range of tequila (obviously) and mezcal to get to know, a healthy selection of wines by the glass, and inventive cocktails to ease you into summer. Their namesake isn’t forgotten. with cocktails like the Atticus Finch, nor is their heritage, with the Mayan Renaissance and a Mate Pisco Sour delighting the tastebuds.

On the food side of things, the menu meanders cleverly between Argentina and Mexico, with nods to Down Under. Flame grilled meat plays a starring role, but there’s also the raw bar menu featuring seafood, kangaroo, and street-food inspired dishes including a Celeriac and Soft Shell Crab Taco, and an Alpaca Mozzarella Empanada. Next time you want a Latin American experience, instead of jumping on a plane to Central America, just head to this bar instead.

A musical takeover

week

Sydney will join the likes of Tokyo, Vienna, Warsaw and Stockholm this September as it plays host to a city-wide takeover and curatorial program of music events thanks to Redbull Music. This four day event, the Redbull Music Academy Weekender, features a jam-packed calendar of live performances, lectures, club nights and art exhibitions.

Events that have got us excited include Flight Facilities taking over The Domain alongside the Sydney Symphony Orchestra (with special guests to be announced). The Weekender will be the world premier of Perth musician Ta-ku’s directorial debut, (m)edian. The final day of proceedings is an all-ages event at Carriageworks for the Great Antipodean Reggae Soundsystem Carnival. With a global barbecue and market stalls to keep you busy, your ears will be alive with the sounds of some of the countries most prominent purveyors of sound system culture. Redbull Music Academy Weekender will be Syndey-wide from September 8 to 11.

Get into the spirit

Indie Tasting image

Australia’s boutique spirit game has reached new levels of late, with new players in the gin, whisky and aperitif popping up around the country. Sydney will see the first event of its kind with an independent spirits showcase coming to town. Indie Tasting will showcase some of the best spirits on the market – and even some that haven’t been released – in a one-day event in the intimate setting of Frankie’s Pizza.

They’ve curated over 120 artisan brands from small batch rum out of Brisbane, to raspberry gin from Perth, to spiced rum from the Adelaide hills. Local favourites Young Henry’s Noble Cut and Poor Tom’s Gin will be in attendance, and six distilleries from North Carolina are representing some of the most exciting things on the international spirit stage.

There’s plenty to do throughout the day, with tastings galore, but there will also be Masterclasses including Mezcal – a journey through wild landscapes, and Here’s what you should ask a craft distiller. The event takes place on Sunday September 18, from 12 to 5pm – tickets here.

Groove is in the heart

dance

Dance is scientifically proven to be awesome. It’s true! The therapy of groove goes far deeper than fitness and flexibility, with a shining light on how it can improve mental wellbeing and boost endorphins. 107 Projects are delivering the goods with weekly dance workshops. No matter what your skills on the d-floor, these well-considered classes will provide benefits beyond the 60 minutes.

Classes are each Tuesday from 6pm. Check your self-consciousness at the door and get moving.

Margaret Cho is a doer. Her CV (if she had one) reads comedian, author, singer-songwriter, actress and fashion designer. Her socially and politically-charged stand-up routines have seen her become one of America’s most celebrated comedians, and lucky for us, she’s bringing her show to the Sydney Opera House for one night only.

Her brilliantly-titled The Psycho Tour – There’s no “I” in team but there is a “CHO” in psycho! will descend into Sydney on September 9. Expect razor-sharp insights to topical and relevant issues, thigh-slapping laughs and a certified good night out. Get your tickets before they sell out.

Whole lotta choc

If you need a pep-up this spring, we have the tastiest festival that will do just that. For two days, The Rocks will host the Smooth Festival of Chocolate, celebrating all things from bean-to-bar. Prepare yo’self for over 80 stalls of gourmet goodness from self-saucing chocolate puddings to artisan chocolate bars and cronuts topped with caramel popcorn. The Kitchen Stage will have choc-stars and demonstrations from the likes of Anna Polyviou and Gigi from Zumbo’s Just Desserts. It’s on from 11-12 September.
