5 Of The Best Aussie Places To See The Leaves Change Colour This Autumn

autumn

Autumn is one of the most comforting times of the year. With orange leaves peppering sidewalks and a crisp bite to the air, no excuses are necessary when it comes to daily hot chocolates, hats and scarves.

It’s also the time when autumn colours are out in full force, so we thought it’d be a good idea to help you out with a list of the best places to go if you want to properly admire the changing of seasons. Most of these places are only a short drive out of the city and there’s no better time to take a mid-year road trip than in autumn.

#1 Orange, NSW

Orange by name and nature, the eclectic rural town is one of the most welcoming you can find. Yes there’s a plethora of cellar doors and wineries to explore, but don’t dismiss the outdoor adventures on offer. Have a picnic at Lake Canobolas, stroll through a sea of grand Autumn-kissed trees at Cook Park, and pick apples at Thornbrook Orchard.

#2 Adelaide Hills, SA

A simple drive through the Adelaide Hills in autumn will satisfy your desire to see some remarkable deciduous trees. Be sure to pop into Hahndorf for a German feast and a stein at the Inn, or visit the Botanic gardens of Mount Lofty and then reach its summit at sunset for stunning panoramic views.

A trip to The Cedars, the marvellous old property and muse of one of Australia’s most famous landscape artists, Hans Heysen, is also a must.

#3 Mount Field National Park, TAS

Only an hour’s drive from Hobart, Mount Field National Park really brightens up in Autumn. And we mean that literally.

Have you heard of the Fagus? It’s a type of shrub unique to Tasmania that turns from red to gold in autumn, displaying a ripple of varying colours and shades as you walk through the trails.

Watch out for the waterfalls and spectacular views as you stroll around, mouth undoubtedly gaping open.

Just 90 minutes outside of Brisbane, Southern Queensland Country is the perfect escape for any Queenslander or out-of-towner looking for a change in scenery.

There’s a good mix of outdoor activities and fun things to do: you can tour the gardens and catch a show at Empire Theatre in Toowoomba, hike up Picnic Point, see the massive natural boulders in Girraween National Park, try a homemade cider from Sutton’s Farm, and watch the water cascade down the spectacular Queen Mary Falls. For something really quirky, check out the famous Goomeri Pumpkin Festival.

#5 High Country, VIC

Perhaps the most autumnal of them all, Victoria’s High Country has a dedicated Autumn Festival to celebrate all things seasonal — it’s cancelled for 2021 but will be back next year. The alpine terrain plays host to some of the most dramatic landscape in the country, with the surrounding towns home to some of the best wineries and restaurants in the state.
